What is the function of a refrigerator compressor?
The main function of a compressor is to compress and control the flow of the refrigerant. The compressor receives low-pressure gas from the evaporator and converts it into high-pressure gas. As the gas is compressed and its pressure increases, its temperature rises. When the compressor starts operating, it draws in the cold refrigerant as a liquid from the evaporator.
The compressor then pushes the hot, high-pressure gas through the external metal coils (tubes) located at the back or bottom of the refrigerator. These coils allow the heat to dissipate into the surrounding air. Under pressure, the gas cools and transforms into a liquid.
The liquid refrigerant continues to flow through the system until it reaches the expansion valve. The valve forces the liquid through a very small opening, turning it into a very cold mist that evaporates as it passes through the freezer coils. This process follows the second law of thermodynamics: heat flows from warmer objects to colder ones. Here, the colder substance is the evaporating gas, and the warmer substance is the surrounding air.
Refrigerators can have compressors installed either at the top or the bottom. Top-mounted compressors are ideal for locations or stores where water or dust may be present on the floor, while bottom-mounted compressors are best suited for hot environments, restaurants, and similar settings.
